Vail Daily column: Poised for more growth

David C. Bentley
Valley Voices

As president of the Cordillera Property Owners Association, I wanted to reflect on a number of positives that the Vail Valley may not know about us.

With more than 7,000 acres, Cordillera offers five neighborhoods, four golf courses, multiple restaurants and spectacular mountain views, all combined with an impressive list of activities and amenities.

I’ve lived in Cordillera since 2006 with my wife Tracey and our young son A.J. The location is delightful — far removed from noise and traffic, yet an easy drive to Vail, Beaver Creek or Eagle. As a captain for American Airlines, I had the good fortune to travel to some remarkable places before I retired. After 37 years in the Vail Valley, I have never been more pleased and proud to live in and to be involved with the Cordillera community.

In 2011, our community saw some dark days when spirits were dampened, property values were stagnant and optimism was low. However, the divisive lawsuits that our community was involved in were fully resolved in 2012.

Now, all that is behind us. Cordillera has 910 home sites, 559 of which are built upon, 10 of which are under design review and 12 more are under construction. Existing home inventory is the lowest it has been since 2008.

Troon Prive, the world’s largest third-party golf club operator, has managed the operations of the Club at Cordillera since 2013. New homeowners and locals are joining the club at an unprecedented rate. Troon General Manager Mike Henritze and his team are providing members with incredible experiences on three distinctly different mountain golf courses.

Rachel Oys, the CPOA’S new general manager, has in just her first 100 days set a remarkable tone of teamwork, excellence and forward thinking for our resort community.

Some recent high-marks:

• The Athletic Center at Cordillera and the Dave Pelz designed nine-hole Short Course have been brought back to full operation after two years of dormancy and are available to all residents.

• The Trailhead Club is home to the popular Cordillera Day Camp (Cordy Camp), now in full swing.

• We have converted all five community pools and spas to saline and ozone purification and have introduced pickleball, the nation’s fastest growing outdoor sport, to our residents.

• Our private stretch of the Eagle River offers superb fishing.

• Our own Vail Gondola Club, steps from Gondola One, is a great place to relax before and after skiing.

The CPOA board’s greatest accomplishment in recent years is in restoring confidence in our community, both to residents of Cordillera and to residents of the valley as a whole. We are working together with Troon Prive and The Lodge and Spa at Cordillera to create a unified voice for Cordillera and a continuing drive toward excellence in our community. It has been a distinct pleasure and privilege to be a part of this work.

If you’ve not visited Cordillera of late, please do so soon. You’ll like what you see!
