What are we waiting for?

While I commend the Vail Town Council for surveying residents’ comments regarding single-use plastic bags in grocery and retail stores, I question why it’s taking years — yes, years — for them to get this far with the proposed ordinance.

I won’t go into the harm and costs of single-use bags, as we are all aware ( I hope) of those issues, I just wonder why it’s taking us so long.

Recently, Los Angeles became the biggest city in the country to ban free plastic bags in grocery stores or pay 10 cents each for paper bags. Aspen, back in October finally took action after studying and debating the issue for three years. Heck, even Mexico, India and Bangladesh have banned them and Chicago is voting this summer on the issue.

We all know the concerns: People will stop going to grocery stores, tourists won’t come to Vail and the world as we know it will probably come to end if we ban plastic bags, so we have to really analyze the issues and make an informed decision. We are not reinventing the wheel here folks.

I urge our leaders, municipal and county, to do the right thing and be leaders. That is why we voted for you. We want you to be decisive and do the right thing, and stop worrying about offending a few people.

Remember, everyone worrying that the bars and restaurants would go out of business if we banned smoking.

I urge our community to participate in the survey and let our leaders know we’re tired of waiting for them to get going on this issue.
