Vail Daily letter: 4-H’s time to shine

Hello, I am this year’s Freedom Riders Drill Team president. As many people know, the Eagle County Fair and Rodeo is coming up, and for many of us it is the high light of our year.

4-H is a wonderful program that allows children and young adults, ages 8-18, to participate in different activities such as raising livestock, shooting sports, clothing construction, and many more. By getting involved in this program, we 4-Hers are taught valuable lessons that will, without a doubt, follow us and continue to shape us for the rest of our lives.

For many of us, our 4-H season is all year long, whether it’s taking care of our livestock and horses or planning projects we will create for next year’s fair with our own hands.

The Freedom Riders Drill Team works from the beginning of the year to create and practice the performance rodeo fans enjoy seeing at the rodeo in July. We begin the year with meetings and practice in the Exhibition Hall, where we learn our pattern on foot, from there we graduate to the indoor barn with our horses.

Once the weather turns warm for the year, we begin the really hard work in the outdoor arena.

Our club has a wide range of children. This year we have five senior 4-Hers — Sarah, Katie, Angela, Kelly and me — who have graduated from high school and will be participating in the Freedom Riders for the last time. We are sad to go but happy to know that a new crop of young kids like the Kromer family, Adie, the Field sisters, Autumn, Erin, Anna, Kelby, Bailey, Natalie, Luke and Malorie will carry on the program. Under the leadership of the leaders like Kris Whittaker and Kendra Scott, this team has grown and developed into a family.

On behalf of the entire Drill Team, I would like to invite everyone to this year’s Eagle County Fair and Rodeo. Many of the members of this club show livestock throughout the week but the Freedom Riders will perform during the rodeo at 7pm, beginning Wednesday the 24th through Saturday the 27th. We have worked so hard this year and would love to see as many people there as possible.

We would like to thank our family and friends for all their love and support. We 4-Hers rely whole heartedly on our families who do so much for us. Having to trailer to practice every Monday night isn’t easy but they do it anyways! We would also like to thank everyone who has supported us in the past and especially Whittaker Landscaping for their generous donations. Last but not least we would like to thank everyone in advance for supporting 4-H in advance as we hope to see you all at this year’s Fair and Rodeo!
