Vail Daily editorial: We’re ready

the Vail Daily Editorial Board

It’s just about party time. The world is coming for a visit — the 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships — and folks in the valley have spent years cleaning, primping and generally putting our best face forward for thousands of visitors.

Vail, which will host many, if not most of the Championships’ non-racing events, has done its usual spectacular job of making its entrances warm and welcoming this season in all-American red, white and blue.

The town also made some temporary alterations to its codes to allow business owners to spruce up their storefronts and interiors.

Beaver Creek Village is a gem, too. The last time an editorial board member was in the village at night, it simply sparkled.

Avon, too, has its best party clothes on. The roundabouts are colorful, the art in the center roundabout looks great — even if, to some eyes, the poles surrounding the main sculpture look a bit like the remains of the box the artwork came in — and the town’s controversial and expensive pavilion/stage will be ready to go for the first parties in town.

All of that is the result of countless hours of work — and, of course, a liberal application of cash from both public and private sources.

It all shows, folks.

What most of us may not notice as much as artwork or festive lighting is the amount of volunteer manpower that is still being poured into the effort of hosting ski racing’s second-biggest show.

From handing out media credentials to checking gates to driving people around, the Championships simply wouldn’t succeed without thousands of volunteers who put in long hours, sometimes in challenging conditions, to ensure these Championships leave participants and visitors hoping to return, and sooner than later.

The process of pulling this event together is a credit to the Vail Valley Foundation, Vail Resorts, Avon, Vail, Eagle County and many more organizations and individuals, all of whom have done everything they can to ensure a smooth-running, entertaining two weeks of racing, concerts, parties and more.

Our house is as shined up as it can be. Now we’ll see if all that planning, working and spending comes together as planned.

We’re ready.
