Pitkin County Sheriff's Office: New Orleans man dies after bike accident

A 74-year-old New Orleans man died Sunday afternoon after he crashed the bicycle he was riding on Maroon Creek Road near the Stein Meadows area, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said.

A Sheriff’s Office statement did not provide the man’s name. A patrol supervisor said that any information on his identity would be released later through the county Coroner’s Office.

Stein Meadows is near the top of the road, and the man’s accident occurred at about 12:25 p.m. near mile marker 9 as he was descending, the Sheriff’s Office said in the statement. He was riding with family and friends when he ran off the right side of the road and was thrown 10 to 15 feet from his bike into the meadows area, onto rough terrain, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The statement did not describe the nature of his injuries. He was treated briefly at the scene and then taken to Aspen Valley Hospital. At 4:25 p.m. the hospital notified the Sheriff’s Office that the man had been pronounced dead, according to the statement.

No other information was available Sunday evening.
