Vail Daily letter: ‘Yes’ on A and B
April 13, 2014
Dear Eagle River Water and Sanitation District voters:
Many of us have hoped and dreamed of the day when the vast loads of nutrients added to our rivers could be greatly diminished by their removal from the discharges of our sewer plants.
Now that removal of phosphorus and nitrogen is mandated by the state and has increased the urgency of this effort by our district. These nutrients promote rapid growth rate of unnatural algae in our streams. In time this rapid growth depletes the oxygen levels in the rivers and kill other forms of life. This has come close to happening in recent years. However, their removal is very costly.
Upgrading the wastewater treatment plants will go a long way toward returning Gore Creek and the Eagle River to the pristine state we saw in our rivers 40 years ago (the Gilman Mine excepted). There will still remain water quality issues to deal with but this upgrade of the three main plants that the district operates will have played a huge role in returning the rivers to their natural state.
On May 6 you will be asked to vote for Ballot Issue A and B for the District to issue bonds to build these massive improvements. By voting "yes" we will allow the district to gain lower interest rates on their bonds, thus saving all of us millions.
They are required by the state to make these improvements and can do it without our vote. But with our vote these savings are achieved.
I urge you to vote "yes" on May 6.
