Vail Daily letter: Thanks for cooperation, assistance

On Sept. 4, an armed robbery occurred in Gypsum, where one “good Samaritan” was seriously injured, our neighbors working in the store that was robbed were traumatized and victimized, and our community was shaken up.

Within several hours of the call, both suspects in the case were apprehended and are currently in custody, and the “good Samaritan” was being treated and is expected a full recovery.

I wanted to express my extreme gratitude to all the people of Eagle County for their patience, cooperation and assistance during this incident and in helping the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office apprehend the suspects.

Throughout the day and into the evening the investigation and search was constantly evolving with leads and tips coming in from multiple people and locations with law enforcement responding to each of them. Without these leads and tips from the community the suspects could quite possibly have evaded arrest and done other damage.

Eagle County Schools and staff did an excellent job working with this office in securing the schools and our children, making sure they remained safe and got home safely after school. The parents were very cooperative and understanding of our not allowing our kids to walk home from school within the search area, and picking their children up without incident; for this I thank each of you!

Of course we could not have accomplished this without the assistance of so many first responders from throughout the county as well as our neighboring counties working together.

We had resources and assistance from Eagle Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Parks and Wildlife Officers, Vail Police Department, Avon Police Department, Vail Communications, Eagle County Ambulance District, Vail Valley Medical Center, Gypsum Fire Protection District, Eagle Fire Protection District, the 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, The Salvation Army and Garfield County Sheriff’s Office .

All of their help and cooperation was invaluable in assisting the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office in the apprehension of the suspects and bringing this incident to closure.

I wanted to say thank you to each and every person who assisted, no matter how small your contribution; we could not have done this without you!

Because of you, our kids and our schools remain safe, our community is healing and recovering, and we continue to look to a much brighter future together!

James Van Beek
