First-grader seriously injured during Eagle Valley Homecoming parade

GYPSUM — A first-grader from Brush Creek Elementary School was seriously injured during the Eagle Valley High School homecoming parade Wednesday.

In a letter sent Thursday to EVHS families, Eagle County Schools Superintendent Jason Glass said Cristopher Garcia fell beneath the wheels of one of the trailers in the parade.

“He is the nephew of a student at EVHS and has several cousins attending our schools,” Glass said. “He sustained multiple injuries to the left side of his body. Emergency responders transported him to VVMC where he was stabilized and evaluated. He was airlifted to Denver Health so that he could receive more specialized pediatric care for his injuries. Our latest information is that he is in serious, but stable condition.”

FUNDRAISERS PLANNED

Glass noted that it is anticipated that Christopher’s health expenses will be a huge burden on his family. A donation fund has been established in Christopher’s name at FirstBank. Additionally, Brush Creek Elementary and EVHS will be organizing fundraisers for the Garcia family members while they are in Denver and after they return to the valley.

“As a school we are continuing with our week of homecoming activities,” said EVHS Principal Greg Doan. “Both our student council and LULAC organizations are planning fundraisers that will happen throughout the rest of the week at our various events. Tonight’s (Thursday’s) volleyball game and bonfire, Friday’s pepfest and football game, and the dance on Saturday night will all feature opportunities for people to contribute to the family funds.”

Doan and Glass also noted that the school is working with students who witnessed the accident.

“We have organized all levels of counseling services to support our students and staff,” Glass said. “There were many students and families at the parade that witnessed the accident and may need our support in the next few days. If you or anyone connected to Eagle County Schools would like to speak with a counselor, please contact any school office and they will provide information.”
