Vail Daily letter: More enforcement needed

In response to the letter regarding collisions on the hill, I personally was hit by a snowboarder at Breckenridge and had to have shoulder surgery with a two-season recovery time. A friend, an ex-patroller, was hit from behind at Vail and is still recovering. In reading the Summit Daily, a woman was hit at Keystone and suffered seven broken ribs and a punctured lung. In these three incidences the offending skiers/boarders left the scene and were not able to be stopped. Just three days ago at Beaver Creek, I stopped behind a yellow “slow” sign with an ambassador present and a skier came down obviously going too fast. The ambassador did nothing. Do they have no power, or do they just stand there with their uniforms on?

What can we really do to stop this?

A thought would be to have people just skiing the hill with power to stop and apprehend that are an extension of the ambassador program to hopefully control this flagrant practice and be able to ski after the violator. Usually the victim is immobile and cannot. The patrol cannot be everywhere. Start pulling tickets, levy fines, impound skis and boards for 24 hours. Make them leave the hill with a patroller, fill out an accident report, after meeting a sheriff at the bottom. If drugs are suspected, the sheriff can deal with the issue.

We need to have more control.
