EAGLE COUNTY — While golf courses upvalley are waiting for the snow to melt, courses downvalley are open and ready for play.

Gypsum Creek Golf Course and Eagle Ranch Golf Club have been open for a few weeks now. The Eagle-Vail Golf Club is set to open 10 holes on May 7 while Vail Golf Club anticipates opening May 15.

DOWNVALLEY

Gypsum Creek was the first course to open. It welcomed golfers to the greens on Feb. 26 with all 18 holes available for play.

“We’ve been busy,” said Tom Busby, general manager. “People play good golf in the spring, too.”

Gypsum Creek is working with a new cart fleet and will undergo a $2 million irrigation renovation in the fall, updating its 20-year-old system. The work is not expected to affect play.

The irrigation system will decrease operation costs and will enhance the playing experience, Busby said.

A single unlimited pass for the nine-month season at Gypsum Creek is $1,600, and punch passes for 10 rounds are $520.

Eagle Ranch opened all 18 holes on March 19.

“It looks great,” said Jeff Boyer, general manager. “We’ve been open a month, so it’s greening up and the golf course is in beautiful condition.”

Season pass prices vary at Eagle Ranch. Currently, it costs $69 for one round including the cart.

UPVALLEY

Eagle-Vail Golf Club is looking to open 10 holes, weather permitting, on Saturday. The club plans to open the Par 3 and foot golf courses on May 27. The driving range opened Saturday.

“It seems to be coming out of winter great,” said Ben Welsh, director of golf. “They mowed the greens and they are super green, so the golf course seems to be handling the moisture well.”

Eagle-Vail will open with holes 1-8, 11 and 12 before opening all 18 as the weather permits.

The course will have a new PGA Junior League, a national program that people from across the valley can participate in.

Cost for a Pinnacle Pass is $1,399 and includes play at the Par 3 course.

Weather permitting, Vail Golf Club will open May 15. The clubhouse renovation is scheduled to be completed by the fall, and golf operations will be located in a temporary structure.

The driving range area will be available June 6 throughout the construction.

“What we plan to have is some artificial hitting areas and then we’ll try to get it back to natural turf as soon as we can,” said Mike Ortiz, of the Vail Recreation District.

Prices haven’t changed at Vail Golf Club; a pass bought before June 1 is $925 and then after June 1 it’s $975.

“We still have 20 holes out there, because we have two extra holes, and I think the course conditions so far are really nice, and our staff is second to none,” Ortiz said.

AROUND THE VALLEY

The Club at Cordillera and the Sonnenalp Club are open; Beaver Creek Golf Club opens Friday; and Red Sky Golf Club is set to open May 13.
