Vail Daily letter: Thank you, Rohn Robbins

Rohn Robbins overstayed his stint as the chairman of the board of directors for the Vail Symposium for nearly an entire year. And for that we are very thankful.

While Rohn will continue to serve on the board and the Executive Committee (an error in our most recently printed brochure did not offer him this recognition), he will be succeeded by Dale Mosier on July 1. With the transition coming up soon, we, the staff, wanted to offer our thanks to Rohn for his leadership.

In the various letters he wrote addressing the Vail Symposium audience, Rohn could quote lyrics from Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” and Descartes in the same letter, reference Henry Kissinger and compared Apollo 14 to the British abandonment of the shilling system. For the three years he combined this creativity and vast knowledge while sitting at the head of our table preaching the importance of fresh, relevant and stimulating programs.

Of course, behind all the words was the work. Rohn bravely built a mostly young but nonetheless completely motivated staff to execute his vision for an organization that stands up in a community focused on physical recreation to say that academia is not only important but can also be exciting. It is has been under Rohn’s leadership that, for the last three and a half years, visitors and locals can brave the raging waters of Dowd Chute or enjoy the expanse of Vail’s Back Bowls by day and then challenge Barney Frank on the Dodd-Frank Act or listen to former Denver Broncos player Reggie Rivers give perhaps the best lecture given between our valley walls.

From his law columns in this very paper to simply sitting down to dinner at the Robbins house, Rohn’s professionalism and leadership clearly stems from genuine curiosity. His time as the chairman of the board of directors for the Vail Symposium offered this in an extraordinary fashion. We are all very pleased to keep Rohn involved with the organization while a new board chair will continue pushing the Vail Symposium forward, while no doubt capitalizing on the great work done by his predecessor.
