Amendment 66 is a bold, progressive change in the way we view, deliver, monitor and account for public education, and it’s stirred up a lot of controversy. But it is a thoughtfully written bill that takes the extremely complex notion of educating the next generation and offers a way for us to make that courageous leap into the future. It provides additional resources for the children that need it most — and subsequently allows all of our children to receive more individualized attention and find their pathway to success. It gives our local district more say in the way they deliver that education — and also requires that district to issue those funds effectively and with accountability. And it offers educators, a remarkably powerful influence in a child’s life, access to tools to become even better teachers. In a nutshell, it asks us to make a commitment to public education the likes of which we’ve never seen — and the rest of the nation is watching.
In a very recent publication (http://issuu.com/eagleschools/docs/altitudereport3) written by our new superintendent of Eagle County Schools, Dr. Jason Glass, our “chief learner” eloquently describes the role of public education. I quote: “ ... We ignite curiosity, open eyes, fuel confidence, protect innocence, feed intelligence, create joy, soften sadness, stimulate creativity, and prepare children for adulthood.”
Is there a more noble cause? Amendment 66 is a promise to deliver that to our children. It addresses real issues in the classroom, puts dollars towards helping every child reach their potential, gives teachers the additional resources they desperately need, and requires an accountability that’s never been so clearly outlined before. That’s called reform, people, and I’m all for it!
