Battle Mountain tries to cross the (Silver) Creek

And other playoff musings

First off, let’s get our Creeks right.

Battle Mountain soccer plays No. 8 Silver Creek today at 3 p.m. Silver Creek is not Sand Creek, the team the Huskies beat in last year’s first round. Glenwood Springs is actually at Sand Creek today. And just in case anyone’s wondering, Steamboat Springs is at Evergreen. The Huskies, it seems, are familiar with a lot of postseason teams.

Just so that everyone’s sure, No. 9 Battle Mountain is at No. 8 Silver Creek today at 3 p.m., and then the bus turns around real quick so that everyone can go to prom.

On a serious note, this seems doable for Battle Mountain.

Like Audrey Teague, I’ve spent too much time looking at 4A soccer on the internet. That’s kind of sad in that she has vested interest in this and my last goal came in 1980, 20 years before for she was born.

Reigning it back in, Silver Creek looks like a good team, but as much as the rating-percentage index doesn’t seem to like the Western Slope, my bet is that the host Raptors didn’t play in the English Premier League.

Not that any of this guarantees a glorious Battle Mountain victory, but the RPI took only two teams from the Northern League into the postseason. The Northern League didn’t have Summit or Rifle, but again it’s not the EPL.

One digression, please — Rifle went 0-15 and was outscored, 125-2, this season. How? If you wondering why Battle Mountain is No. 9 in the silly RPI — this is why. Records of 0-30 and 4-26 (Summit) went into the Huskies’ opponents’ winning percentage.

OK, we’re back. The highest-ranked 4A team Silver Creek played was No. 11 Green Mountain, a 2-1 loss. That’s pretty favorable for the Huskies. The Raptors also played a scoreless draw with 5A Legacy. We’ll call that the equivalent of a tie at Stubler Field.

Maggie Skidmore’s back in the back four/five/six. This edition of Battle Mountain girls soccer plays defense with Addie Smith, Skidmore, Claire Krueger, Izzy McMurrain, Cayla Woodworth and Wilder Isom, something lacking in past teams.

We’re pretty sure the Huskies can score — Teague, Gabby Caballero, Kate Mitchell and Bailey Murray. Rayna Kenney should be back to take corners. (She was out with the flu against Northfield.)

The pieces are in place. This team has been together for a while now.

Make it happen, ladies.

News and notes

• Vail Mountain is at Stargate School at 9 a.m. Through the intricacies of the RPI the host Eagles are the No. 5 seed in the state, despite being 5-5 in the 3A Metro Conference. (Huh?) Seriously the 3A Metro has No. 1 Colorado Academy, No. 2 Kent Denver, No. 3 Jefferson Academy, No. 5 Stargate, No. 7 Peak to Peak, No. 10 St. Mary’s, No. 11 Skyview and No. 13 Prospect Ridge in the tournament.

Apparently the Metro is the EPL. It’s nice of CHSAA to let the rest of the state break this up.

We cite “The Hotel New Hampshire” since VMS has been on a roll with John Irving.

• It isn’t the playoffs, but it’s darn close … Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley have their last meets of the regular season. The Huskies are in St. Vrain, where it does not rain. (It actually has in the past.) Eagle Valley is at Rangeview Raider Last Chance Qualifier.

Good luck to all.
