BRECKENRIDGE — Awards were announced this week for Judgment on the Hill, the industry judging component of the seventh annual Breckenridge Craft Spirits Festival, which took place Oct. 21-23 in Breckenridge. In all, 22 distinctions were awarded, with Eagle County's 808 Distillery and 10th Mountain Whiskey & Spirits Co. taking home silver medals.

Each distillery could enter two spirits into a variety of categories. The spirits were judged in a double-blind taste test by a panel of industry experts. The panel bestowed nine gold and 15 silver judgments. The awards were based on the quality of each spirit with regard to taste, smell, integrity and smoothness and not as a ranking of spirits against one another.

"This format of judging helps raise the quality of the emerging craft spirits industry as a whole because our products are being judged on their intrinsic merit," said Jordan Via, master distiller at Breckenridge Distillery.

Both the Alpenglow Liqueur and Bourbon Whiskey from the 10th Mountain Whiskey & Spirit Co. won hardware, as well as Leo's Limoncello from 808 Distillery.

The festival featured 37 craft distillers at the Still on the Hill grand tasting, the premier event of the weekend-long festival, where the public was able to meet the distillers, try the various spirits and vote for their favorite spirit. Many of the distillers also made cocktails featuring their spirits so guests could experience how the products could be used. Attendees received poker chips used to vote for their favorite distillery, and Distillery 291, from Colorado Springs, won the People's Choice award.

Other events at the festival included a Poker Run and Bar Mix-off, historic saloon tour, Women in Spirits workshop, cemetery tour and shot glass decorating, as well as a Breckenridge Distillery open house and Bloody Sunday hangover brunches around town.

Dates for the 2017 event will be announced early in 2017 and will be posted on http://www.breckenridgecraftspiritsfestival.com.
