3. Austin Chow
Eagle painter James Van Fossan’s work is baroque and realist, but with a distinctive modern quality to it. After spending 13 years in a corporate job, Van Fossan left to pursue art full time. With only self-taught drawing skills at his command, he picked up a paintbrush for the first time at age 40. “When you have something to say and you have the medium in control, you are going to be a good artist,” Van Fossan said to the Vail Daily in 2016. In 2015, he completed “Drama Magnifico,” his 8’ x 6’ masterpiece which was a finalist in Art Renewal Center’s 2014-2015 International ARC Salon. The piece took more than three years to complete and features more than 150 figures. In addition to his painting, Van Fossan plays guitar and posts videos on YouTube of both his music and his art.
