For 2017, Eagle Flight Days is taking off to infinity and beyond.
This year’s theme — Eagle Flight Days: It’s out of this world! — encourages participants to find inspiration in the wide expanse of space. From astronauts to aliens, the celebration will take an extra special, extraterrestrial turn.
The community celebration was first held in 1922 and has been presented without fail since 1961. The weekend promises a batch of familiar fun and new options. From the baby contest and pet show that launch the action on Friday afternoon to the main stage concert that concludes the party on Saturday night, there is something for all ages.
All activities are held at Eagle Town Park, unless otherwise noted. Here is a rundown of Eagle Flight Days events:
When: Open Friday and Saturday, during other events.
Details: The adventure carnival will include a ropes course, stand-up paddleboards, remote controlled trucks, jump and slide, animal land toddler bouncy house, surf board simulator, climbing wall, water balls and a train. Wristbands for the carnival rides will cost $25 and will be sold at the event. A special wristband option for activities appropriate for children age 5 and younger will be available for $10.
Centennial Stage Free Concerts
When: 8 p.m. Friday, featuring Oakhurst; 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, featuring Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, and 8:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday, featuring The Williams Brothers Band.
Details: Oakhurst is a an acclaimed bluegrass-rock band from Denver. Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band is a three-piece American country blues band from Brown County, Indiana that has played at Austin City Limits, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the Bonnaroo Festival. The Williams Brothers Band is a rock group from Grand Junction that headlines regional venues, festivals and tours throughout the western United States.
Castle Peak Veterinary Pet Show
When: 5 p.m. Friday.
Details: Hosted by Castle Peak Veterinary Service. Local kids are invited to bring their pets — anything furry, feathery, scaled or slimy. A slew of prizes will be awarded, including best costume. Contact Castle Peak Veterinary at 970-328-5444 for more information.
Batson’s Baby Contest
When: 5 p.m. Friday.
Details: Batson’s Corner Store and Eagle Pharmacy is sponsoring this contest for babies younger than the age of 2. Ribbons and prizes will be awarded in the following categories: best smile, best eyes, biggest dimples, best theme wear (get your cape on), chubbiest feet, best hat, best swimsuit, most vocal, baby relative look-alike and best hair.
Dark Skies Initiative
When: 10 p.m. Friday.
Details: Guided star gazing and a discussion about light pollution led by Dark Skies Eagle and sponsored by Slifer, Smith and Frampton.
5K Fun Run and walk
When: Saturday; 7:30 a.m. run and walk and 9 a.m. Kids 1K Fun Run.
Details: The Eagle Valley High School Booster Club is hosting the Jake Brock and Tiffany Myers Memorial 5K. Register at Eagle Town Hall by 5 p.m. Friday, with $25 individual or $50 family fee. Registration will be accepted on the day of the race beginning at 6:45 a.m. and up to 15 minutes prior to race start time. Fee on race day will be $30, and there is no guarantee of receiving a race T-shirt; quantities are limited. Start and finish at Wall Street between Sixth and Seventh streets. Race-day registration will be located near the run start. The course will loop through Eagle Ranch. Kids 1K Fun Run will also start at Wall Street and circle through the bike path between the Golden Eagle Senior Center and the Bull Pasture, with all of the participating kids receiving a ribbon.
When: 7:30 to 9 a.m. Saturday.
Details: Members of the Eagle Lions Club will serve their signature flapjacks. Look for the Lions Club trailer and the folks wearing purple vests.
Flight Days Parade
When: 10 a.m. Saturday.
Details: The theme is Eagle Flight Days: It’s out of this world! Entry fee is $10 plus one bag of candy, which will be handed out following the parade. No candy can be thrown along the parade route. The parade begins at the corner of Fifth and Broadway Streets and ends at Second Street. Parade lineup begins at
9 a.m. and volunteers will be available to assist. Judging will begin at 9:45 a.m. Everyone will be considered for the Judge’s Award (the entry that best represents the theme of the parade). In addition, ribbons will be awarded for the following categories: Children’s Group, Marching and Walking Group, Floats, Vehicles, Equestrian, Novelty (clowns, animals, non-motorized vehicles). Completed forms and fees may be returned to Eagle Town Hall by Thursday.
Kids Crafts Tent
When: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Details: Free kids’ craft activities, sponsored by the Eagle Flight Days Committee.
When: Competition is Saturday, beginning immediately after the parade.
Details: Entry fee is $10 per person.
Deep Space Chocolate Bake Off
When: Noon to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Details: Whip up your best chocolate confection for this competition. Please provide enough for 100 small tastings. Serving supplies will be provided. Tasters will vote on first, second and third place.
Push Cart Race
When: 12 p.m. Saturday.
Details: Teams of three to five participants are invited to build a push cart and race head-to-head through a slalom course located on Washington Street. Two team members can push, one has to ride. The first place team will win $300, second place wins $200 and third place wins $100. Additionally prizes will be awarded for the cart that best reflects the Flight Days space theme and for the team with the best costumes. The event is sponsored by Alpine Lumber. Basketball Shoot Out
When: 3 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Details: Register on site prior to competition start time. Prizes will be awarded.
When: Saturday; registration begins at 2:30 p.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m. The show starts at 3:30 p.m.
