EAGLE — Eagle River Youth Coalition will host the fifth annual Family Jam and Summer Plan on Sunday at Eagle Valley Middle School.
This one-day fair brings together almost 40 local summer camp and activity providers to help parents plan their families’ summers. The event has historically been held in May, but due to feedback from parents about planning time, it’s been moved up to April.
“We try to make the Family Jam and Summer Plan a one-stop shop for parents. The camps are providing a slew of activities throughout the day for kids so parents can have time to ask questions,” said Heather Hower, marketing and events coordinator for Eagle River Youth Coalition.
The school gym will be ablaze with activities for children: a bouncy house from Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District, a climbing wall, free homemade ice cream from Sundaes ice cream shop and karaoke from Sandman, with more than 30,000 songs for crooners to choose from.
“The most valuable part was being able to talk to parents and teach them what we have to offer for them and their children,” said one participant at last year’s fair.
This year, the Vail Valley Medical Center will team up with the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office for an outdoor bike rodeo, so children should bring their bikes and be ready to wrangle their steel steeds. The Avon Police Department will bring a car and let children — and probably their curious parents, too — climb through it and get a feel for it.
‘One of our favorite events’
Other participating organizations include Keystone Science Center, Walking Mountains Science Center, Bright Future Foundation, Alpine Arts Center, Avon Recreation Center, Camp SMashBox, Bravo! Vail Music Festival, Trio Equine Therapy, Women’s Empowerment Workshop, Speak Up Reach Out, Mountain Valley Horse Rescue, Ute Springs Experiential Learning, Vail Valley Soccer Club, YouthPower365, Colorado State University Extension and 4H Club, Girl Scouts, InteGreat! and Adventure Travel Guides.
“This is one of our favorite events of the year,” said Michelle Stecher, executive director of the Eagle River Youth Coalition. “It allows us to do what we do best, which is pairing families with services that exist in Eagle County. We have so many amazing programs here that everyone doesn’t know everything that is offered. Hopefully, Family Jam and Summer Plan helps families connect with camps.”
