The Vail Comedy Festival is back in Vail Village this Memorial Day Weekend, with dozens of comedians flying in from around North America for the annual event. Andy Haynes visits from New York City. Haynes has appeared on HBO and “Conan” and has a stand-up video with over one million views online. Mark Masters, founder of the Vail Comedy Festival, caught up with him to find out what this once professional skier has to say.
Have you ever performed in the Vail Valley?
Yes, a couple of times. Three times in Vail, and once in Breck.
Do you have a favorite Colorado comedy memory?
I feel like I’ve really liked them all. I usually use it as an excuse to go skiing or find some water to jump in, but my favorite (if I had to choose) was a show we did in Breckenridge. Just a great audience and a really fun show.

What is your favorite thing about comedy festivals?
Hanging with other comics that I don’t get to see a lot or I’ve just met. The activities the festival plans. Not having to change diapers.
What do you know about Vail Comedy Festival?
Nothing except it’s in Vail, I presume.
You’ve worked on some pretty big projects, tell us about one of your favorites?
I’m a lifelong football fan, so everything I’ve gotten to do that gave me access to the beautiful game was pretty cool. Also, I’m a sucker for fame, so all the jobs I’ve gotten to do in Hollywood with the lights, camera, action really were fun for me.
You live in New York City but tour nationally, how does Colorado compare to other markets?
Denver is an amazing market for comedy. Having an established club like Comedy Works and then a lot of great comics and smaller venues has made a really strong scene and great audience for comedy. Like any state, it depends on where you are, but I’ve noticed most of the other gigs I did had similarly urbane and fun audiences, except Colorado Springs. I don’t know what the hell is happening there.
How would you describe your comedy?
I’d say it’s personal and observational with some commentary on politics and culture. Some people used to say I was dark, but I think that’s just because I’m kind of deadpan.
What is next for Andy Haynes?
FAME!!! I hope. I’ll settle for lots of money though. But in all seriousness, I’m working on a show that is more of a one-man-show vibe and very personal. I hope to put that up in 2026.
