Frences Moore Lappe keynote speaker at free CMC Sustainability Conference on Tuesday

Renowned writer and activist Frances Moore Lappe will give the keynote address at the Colorado Mountain College Sustainability Conference at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Author or co-author of 19 books including the classic “Diet for a Small Planet,” Lappe is a leading activist in the areas of hunger, poverty and the environment. CMC’s conference starts at 3:30 p.m. at the Vail Valley Edwards campus at 150 Miller Ranch Road.

Colorado Mountain College Vail Valley at Edwards will present renowned writer and activist Frances Moore Lappe at the college’s fourth sustainability conference on Tuesday.

Lappe’s bestselling 1971 book, “Diet for a Small Planet,” has sold over 3 million copies and has been called “one of the most influential political tracts of the times” by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Lappe has written 18 additional books about hunger, poverty, the environment and what she calls “living democracy.” She is the recipient of the Right Livelihood Award and the Outstanding Public Scholar Award, among others, and co-founded Food First, the Center for Living Democracy, the American News Service and Small Planet Institute.

‘Empowering Our Community’

Following the conference theme, “Empowering Our Community through Research and Practice,” activities starting at 3:30 p.m. will also include student presentations on community endeavors and a faculty member discussing marine biodiversity. The college’s Sustainability Studies department will also unveil details about a national partnership among CMC, Recycle Across America and Unilever supporting a Recycling Is Beautiful campaign.
