EDWARDS — Everybody loves a warm Friday afternoon, but add a handful of hot horns to the mix and it's a full-blown party. Catch Red Young + His Hot Horns on Friday, Aug. 3, at the Riverwalk Backyard Amphitheater, part of the summer-long Vail Jazz Festival.

Early blues are the benchmark for this tight ensemble, which includes alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, as well as trumpets, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals. Inspired by the pre-guitar blues era featuring stars such as Ray Charles, Percy Mayfield, Joe Williams and Big Joe Turner, Red Young + His Hot Horns are Austin City Limits regulars.

The band's repertoire doesn't end with blues, however. Expect to hear lively renditions of classics by Count Basie, Charles Mingus, Quincy Jones and Dizzy Gillespie, as well as Young's colorful originals.

Cultivating Creativity

Juggling as many as eight bands at a time, Young was drawn to the piano at the age of 3 and has been cultivating his creativity on the keys ever since. Over the ensuing decades, he has written for, recorded or performed with the likes of Dolly Parton, Sonny and Cher, Marcia Ball and Linda Ronstadt. He's written arrangements for movies such as "The Line of Fire" and "Indecent Proposal" and TV shows "Everybody Loves Raymond," "The Osbornes" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

With His Hot Horns, Young seeks every opportunity to make the brass shine. For more information about the Vail Jazz Festival, call 970-479-6146 or visit vailjazz.org.
