Ski joring competition in Leadville

Take a break from skiing and riding and view the exciting sport of ski joring. The historic town of Leadville will host this two-day event that is so fun to watch and participate in if you dare. Ski joring is basically where skilled horses and riders pull talented, daring (and maybe a little crazy?) skiers through a course that contains gates, jumps and rings the riders need to put a baton through. The ski racer is timed, and penalties are given for missing rings or dropping the baton. Hang on to your hats, it’s fast paced, and it’s held right on Harrison Avenue, the main drag in Leadville.
Saturday starts with a Calcutta and auction on Harrison Avenue and Sixth Street. The competitions will get kicked off at noon with the singing of the National Anthem at 11:45 a.m. followed by the Open, Sport and Snowmobile Divisions. Kids will also get a chance to experience the thrill of ski joring by being pulled by a snowmobile after the main races end on Saturday, which are expected to end around 3 p.m. Head to the Elks Club in Leadville for the awards ceremony immediately after the race action.
On Sunday, the Calcutta and auction will continue at 9:30 a.m. with ski joring returning for day two at noon. Please note that the kids won’t get to try ski joring on Sunday.
If you want to test your mettle ski joring, you must register at the Elks Lodge in person on Friday for Saturday’s event and on Saturday for Sunday’s event. To learn more visit the official event website at LeadvilleSkiJoring.com or follow Leadville Ski Joring on Facebook for the latest updates.
Vail Yeti Hockey vs Breckenridge Vipers

There’s rivalry hockey going on this weekend between Vail Yeti Hockey and Breckenridge Vipers. Since the two teams are only separated by Vail Pass, the Friday night game will be played at the Stephen C. West Arena in Breckenridge before the teams move west on Saturday night to play the second game of the weekend at the Dobson Arena in Vail. Since there’s only one home game, it’s sure to be a sell out, so get your tickets in advance.
The doors open at 7 p.m. so come early and grab snacks and drinks at the concession stand and show your team pride by buying some Yeti merch like jerseys and hats. The puck drops at 7:45 p.m.
In between periods the fun continues as t-shirts are tossed into the crowd between the first and second period from Bud Light and Cutwater. There is also a Chuck-a-Puck contest for charity each week and this week’s beneficiary is Berry Creek Middle School’s clubs and activities. Coleman Custom Homes the sponsor of the weekend. Win or lose, the after party will be at Garfinkel’s in Lionshead. For more information and to get tickets, go to VailYetiHockey.com.
