Vancouver, Canada’s Sunee Dhaliwal will headline a special Vail Comedy Show pop-up Sunday in Lionshead at El Sabor. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will start at 7:30. Dhaliwal answered these questions in advance of his visit.

Have you ever performed in the Vail Valley?

No I have not been able to perform in Vail yet, so I’m excited and looking forward to this show. Other than Denver I’ve only performed in Boulder. Being from Vancouver we have a ski resort that’s like Vail called Whistler, it’s world renowned and I’ve performed there. It’s always a fun time because the whole village comes out, my sights are high for this show.

Do you have a favorite Colorado comedy memory?

I have great memories of the Colorado comedy scene, however everything is so new that I can’t really narrow it down to one. I will say the comics in the scene have been super welcoming and the shows so far have been great (meaning the crowds have been fun and receptive). For right now my favorite memory is performing at the Comedy Works comedy club in Denver for the first time (this was years ago) but it is every bit as amazing as everyone says it is.

You have opened for some very famous comedians, any fun stories or memorable occurrences?

Too many to count, some of my favorites are hanging out with the late Charlie Murphy in his dressing room drinking tequila as he told all of us stories from the road. When I was young and super new to comedy I somehow was put on a show to open for Tom Segura who was and still is one of my favorites. The experience amazing, he was super nice and gave me a compliment that I always hold near and dear to me. He said, about one of my jokes, “that joke is one of those ones where I say ‘man I wish I thought of that.'” I replied with “I think the same of your stuff.”

What do you know about Vail Comedy Show?

Honestly I am coming to this show completely blind. I kind of prefer it that way though. Anything I find out about Vail and it’s comedy scene will be that much fresher for me leading up to the show. Saying I’m looking forward to it would be an understatement, can’t wait to get there and see everything Vail has to offer.

Any major events coming up?

I have two major events coming up comedy-wise. I have a national tour that will be kicking off in the winter, and around the same time I will be releasing my comedy album called “Broken Dreams”.

The tour is nice and I love traveling and performing, but the album is what I’m really excited for.

You are out of Vancouver, Canada but tour around North America, how does Colorado compare to other markets?

Vancouver is home to me and where I started comedy, as well as where I honed my skills so it’ll always have a special place in my heart. Colorado, however, is unbelievable. The talent, the clubs, the crowds are all phenomenal. The audience I feel like just get comedy, they are smart and are always there for comedy. In the short time I’ve been in Colorado the comedians always impress me with how original and funny they are.

How would you describe your comedy?

The content of my comedy mainly deals with true stories of my travel and also my family. My parents were born in India and immigrated to Canada but you would not be able to tell by looking at me so there’s a lot of material there. I also do a lot of crowd work but never to make fun of anyone, I’m genuinely interested in people’s lives.

What is next for Sunee Dhaliwal?

I have that tour and comedy album coming out. Any and everything that is in the works can be found on my Instagram @SunnyDComedy.

One big thing is that I am moving to Denver, this scene and the comedians have been great to me so I’m really excited to call it my home.

In September Comedy Cellar regular Daniel Simonsen from “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will perform at Vail Comedy Show in Eagle and Vail. In October Steven Rogers from New York City will perform in Vail and Leah Bonnema from Los Angeles will perform in Eagle as part of Mountain Fresh Comedy Festival. Tickets for all shows are available at VailComedyShow.com.
