“Spring in Vail is one of the best times of the season. The snow is soft, the sun is out, and there are so many exciting events happening,” said Phil Metz, director of marketing for Vail and Beaver Creek. “Vail is excited to celebrate the close of another incredible winter season.”

Free music

On Saturday, April 15, the Spring Back to Vail celebration will ramp up with a free concert from 123GO! Project and Magic! at Ford Park. The venue will open at 5:30 p.m., with music starting at 6 p.m. 123GO! Project is a rock ’n’ roll super group featuring guitarist Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, vocalist Brett Scallions of Fuel and bassist Stefan Lessard of the Dave Matthews Band.

The 123GO! Project started in 2011 during the Sundance Film Festival where Stefan Lessard from Dave Matthews Band and Mike McCready from Pearl Jam were working together on the sound track for the film Horrible Bosses. Stefan and Mike called their friend Brett Scallions, lead singer from Fuel, who quickly joined them and brought in heavy hitting drummer Kenneth Schalk to round out the band.

Spring Back to Vail will mark the first free outdoor performance for the 123GO! Project. Dave Matthews Band is taking 2017 off from touring and Mike McCready and Pearl Jam will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 7. To celebrate all of this fun energy the band is working with partners JBL Professional and Martin Lighting to use the latest technology to help craft a great concert experience in Vail.

Toronto-bred, Los Angeles-based quartet Magic! is Nasri Atweh on lead vocals, Mark Pelli on guitar, Ben Spivak on bass and Alex Tanas on drums. In 2014, Magic! scored the song of the summer with its debut single “Rude” — a reggae-pop tune that held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks. This week, Magic! released 2017’s song of the summer, “Girl at Coachella,” with Matoma featuring D.R.A.M.

Other events

The schedule of activities for this year’s Spring Back to Vail will once again include the sponsor expo village at the base of Gondola One in Mountain Plaza on Friday, April 14, and Saturday, April 15, and at the base of Golden Peak on Sunday, April 16. Spring Back to Vail also welcomes back Triple R Rewards, where visitors and locals can get special deals from participating restaurant, retail and relaxation entities throughout the week.

The second annual Bud Light Bags Tournament will kick off at Mid-Vail on Saturday alongside the Tikis and Tunes Luau. The event begins at noon and includes a pig roast, drink specials, live music, giveaways and more.

The spring tradition of donning costumes and skimming across icy water holds strong with the World Pond Skimming Championships on Sunday, April 16. A panel of judges scores each competitor on distance, style, creativity and water resistance.

The top male and female in the contest will each be awarded the grand prize of a 2017-18 Vail Resorts Epic Pass and a pair of Liberty skis. The contest gets underway at 3 p.m., and the Golden Peak venue opens at noon for sponsor expos and giveaways.
