15-year-old driver killed near Byers
BYERS, Colorado ” The State Patrol says a 15-year-old Strasburg girl driving a car near Byers was killed when the car rolled.
Trooper Gilbert Mares said Tonya Dmitruk was killed late Saturday.
Three female passengers, all teens from the area, were injured.
Mares said the driver lost control of the car and went off the side of the road, briefly becoming airborne, before rolling. No one was ejected, although only one of the teens, a passenger, was wearing a seatbelt.
Neither alcohol nor drugs was suspected to be a factor, but driver inexperience likely contributed to the accident.
Colorado law does not permit drivers under 18 to carry passengers under the age of 21 unless they have been driving at least six months.
Dmitruk was not old enough to have a license.
Mares said no charges will be filed.
