19-year-old dies in car wreck

EAGLE COUNTY ” A 19-year-old Mancos man died Saturday in a rollover accident on Interstate 70 near Gypsum at 2:55 p.m.

Four people, all students at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, were heading east on I-70 in a 1991 Toyota 4Runner near mile marker 140 when the right rear tire failed and the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The car crossed into the median and rolled two and a half times before stopping.

The two back seat passengers, Nicholas Ludwig, 19, of Berthod, and Kathryn A. Ball, 20, of Evergreen, were ejected from the vehicle. Corrigan Conroy, 20, of Grand Junction, was riding in the front passengers seat, remained in the car during the crash and sustained minor injuries.

Enrique Gutierrez, 19, of Mancos, was driving the car and wearing his seat belt. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis.

The age of the tire may have been the reason it failed, officials said. The three passengers were transported to Vail valley Medical Center. The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the accident.
