2 Do: Our picks for top activities in the Vail Valley today
1. Test yourself in the Berry Picker race — The Vail Recreation District’s trail running race series continues today with the Berry Picker, a grueling trek that’s about as close to going straight up the mountain as you can on a trail. The race begins at 8 a.m. at the base of Gondola One in Vail Village, testing runners of all abilities on both single-track and double-track terrain over 3.4 miles of uphill running with an average grade of 14 percent. The race ends at Eagle’s Nest at the top of Vail Mountain. On-site registration is available at Mountain Plaza in Vail Village this morning.
2. Check out the Beaver Creek Arts Festival — For two and a half decades, hundreds of artists and fine crafters have lined the streets of Beaver Creek to participate in this extraordinary art festival. Festival patrons and art collectors alike can visit with artists showcasing life-size sculptures, spectacular paintings, one-of-a-kind jewels, photography, ceramics and much, much more. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.
Paul Cuthbertson set out by himself around 3 p.m. Friday from the trailhead that leads up to the Polar Star Inn, according to his father, Mike, but never made it to the popular backcountry hut as a late-spring snowstorm moved in.
