2 killed in plane crash near Steamboat Springs

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colorado – Routt County sheriff’s officials say a pilot and his adult son were killed in a single-engine turboprop plane crash near Yampa Valley Regional Airport.

Sheriff’s investigator Ken Klinger says the plane left the airport Sunday morning but crashed about a mile away after apparently trying to return about 10 minutes later. The cause of the crash wasn’t known.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer says there was a fire after the crash.

Kenitzer says the Pilatus PC-12 was heading to Chino, Calif. Klinger says the victims, whose names weren’t released, split their time between Colorado and the West Coast.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators were expected on the scene Monday.
