VAIL VALLEY, Colorado – Flu appears to be spreading at some Vail Valley schools.

A rise in the number of kids out sick at Minturn Middle School and the Eagle County Charter Academy recently prompted school officials to send letters home to parents, district spokesman Matt Earle said.

Thirty-eight students and one staff member stayed home from Minturn Middle School on Monday, he said. Last week, Minturn Middle School reported just seven students out sick for the whole week, Earle said.

At Eagle County Charter Academy in Edwards, 35 kids were out sick on Monday, compared with about three or four students last week, he said.

Students are out sick with flu-like symptoms such as a fever of 101 degrees or higher, coughing, sore throat, vomiting and aching, Earle said.

Letters to parents asked them to keep sick kids home from school.

The district on Monday started keeping a daily tally of the number of students out sick with flu-like symptoms at all of its schools, Earle said. Previously, the district had been keeping a weekly tally on Fridays.

The district doesn’t keep records of how many students have been diagnosed with H1N1, he said.

“We just suspect that if they have flu-like symptoms, it’s probable that it’s H1N1,” Earle said.
