2001: Vail, nation come together

Once up on a time, before we took ourselves so seriously, Vail used to host a spring event dubbed The Rental Cup. Locals would compete in really shoddy rental ski gear, wear blue jeans and generally enjoy a sunny day - with no competitor quite sure whose side the beer was on.

You remember where you were on 9/11. For most Americans, there was pre-9/11 and post 9/11.

Post 9/11, we remembered that we really do care about each other, but sometimes it takes real trouble to make us realize it. Flags around Eagle County flew at half staff for months.

Of course, some folks put themselves in the metaphorical crosshairs.

Eagle County Commissioner Arn Menconi didn’t sign a county resolution condemning terrorism, supporting President Bush, urging citizens to give money and blood, and hug warm fuzzy puppies.

Some local citizens tried to get him recalled. They got most of the 3,500 signatures they needed to force an election. As for Arn, he apologized for offending people, then hunkered down for the duration.

Speaking of stuff you may or may not be able to control, Vail’s opening day was pushed back a week, due to the unseasonably warm weather and lack of snow, both natural and manmade.
