31st annual tree lighting Friday in Beaver Creek

Daily staff report

Get in the holiday spirit and bring the whole family out to enjoy carolers, the winner of the children’s poetry contest, fireworks and a visit from Santa. All of the events take place around the ice rink in Beaver Creek Plaza today.

For generations families have participated in the Tree Lighting festivities which include a fireworks display, holiday poetry contest, a visit by Santa on a zamboni and, in more recent years, the Gingerbread House Competition. Elaborate gingerbread creations will be on display for the Gingerbread House Competition in the Gerald R. Ford Hall at the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek and 100 percent of the silent auction proceeds will go to Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), a local organization serving children in Eagle, Summit, Lake and Clear Creek counties.

Head to the Vilar Performing Arts Center following the 6 p.m. tree lighting for a free family film. There will be a public reception with hot chocolate and cookies from 6:30 to 7 p.m. This will be followed by a quick 30-minute movie called “Shrek the Halls,” and then the full length feature “How to Train Your Dragon.”

Tickets go on sale at the Vilar Box Office at 5 p.m.. Seating is first come, first served.
