700 pounds of meat dumped at national monument
Durango, Co Colorado
DURANGO ” Vandals who dumped about 700 pounds of elk, deer and cow carcasses at Canyons of the Ancients National Monument near Cortez could face up to a year in jail and a $100,000 fine, if they are caught.
Bureau of Land Management officials said several signs and trailhead facilities also were destroyed, but BLM law enforcement officer Logan Briscoe said it’s unclear whether all the vandalism is related.
The carcasses were found Jan. 21 near the mouth of Rock Creek Canyon. Briscoe said the animal parts may have come from a meat processing facility.
Briscoe said the signs will be replaced at taxpayer expense, unless the vandals are caught and pay fines to cover the cost of replacement.
