8-year-old dies in West Slope crash

MONTROSE, Colorado – An 8-year-old boy died Thursday after a dump truck rammed into his family’s minivan when it was stopped at a red light.

Josiah McCracken of Montrose wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the hospital, State Patrol spokesman Gilbert Mares said.

Two other children in the van, a 14-year-old girl and a 1-year-old girl, were restrained and weren’t injured. The 43-year-old driver, Candie McCracken, suffered minor injuries.

The patrol said the McCrackens’ Ford Windstar had been traveling just in front of a 2000 Kentworth dump truck that was pulling a trailer when the van slowed and stopped at a red light at the intersection of Colorado 50 and 348.

The dump truck hit the back of the van, sending it through the intersection, off the side of the road and into a utility pole.

Mares said investigators believe inattentive driving contributed to the crash, which is still under investigation. The truck’s driver, Ronald Wilborn, 48, of Fruita, was charged with careless driving causing death.
