A branch off of Jerry Garcia’s tree

Andrew Harley
Special to the Daily Melvin Seals and JGB play State Bridge tonight and Sunday in Bond.

Melvin Seals and JGB re-create what Seals spent 15 years perfecting. The original Jerry Garcia Band featured Seals on the Hammond B3 and keyboards. When Garcia passed away in 1995, Seals got to work on the new JGB with original background singers Gloria Jones and Jackie Labranch.

The new JGB includes Jimmy Saluzzi on guitar and Ron Penque on bass and vocals among other musicians well versed in tunes that aren’t bound to strict arrangements. The Jerry Garcia sound that the band focuses on typically wanders from original numbers to concentrate on familiar songs. When Seals joined the original Jerry Garcia Band early in 1980, Garcia was quoted as saying, “This big guy. He was just playing a Fender Rhodes, but he was playing it so tasty. He was just playing the tastiest little stuff. I thought, ‘This guy is just too much.'”

Seals has made his musical rounds, playing with legends like Chuck Berry, Charlie Daniels and Elvin Bishop.Seals and JGB get almost acoustic at State Bridge Lodge tonight in Bond at 7, and the band performs there again on Sunday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 each or $20 for a two-day pass.
