‘A Chorus Line’ comes to Vilar in Beaver Creek
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL, Colorado – The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical “A Chorus Line” plays the Vilar Performing Arts Center (VPAC) in Beaver Creek Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
“A Chorus Line” is a musical about Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line. With 19 main characters, it is set on the bare stage of a Broadway theater during an audition. The show provides a glimpse into the personalities of the performers and the choreographer as they describe the events that have shaped their lives and their decisions to become dancers. Songs featured in the musical include: “One,” “I Hope I Get It,” “Sing” and “What I Did for Love.”
“A Chorus Line” was revived on Broadway in 2006. USA Today called the new production, “Exhilarating and endearing, it still has a freshness and fervency too seldom seen in contemporary musicals.”
The original production of “A Chorus Line” opened in New York at the Public Theater’s Newman Theatre on May 21, 1975 and later transferred to Broadway’s Shubert Theatre. In 1976, the musical received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Score and Book, as well as the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. “A Chorus Line” ran for nearly 15 years, closing on April 28, 1990 after 6,137 performances and remains the longest-running American musical in Broadway history.
“A Chorus Line,” conceived and originally choreographed and directed by Michael Bennett, features a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban.
Hamlisch will also perform at the Vilar in 2011. His show on Feb. 2 will include performances from his favorite works (including music from “A Chorus Line”). Hamlisch will also share stories about his music and motion picture scores.
Tickets for “A Chorus Line” are $78/98 based on seating. Tickets for “An Evening with Marvin Hamlisch” are $98 and are available online at http://www.vilarpac.org, by calling 970-845-TIXS(8497) or in person at the box office in Beaver Creek.
