Each year, the Vail Valley Foundation holds a lunch for donors at La Tour in Vail as a way to say thanks for their contributions to the Vail International Dance Festival. In the past, Katherine Kersten, who headed up the dance festival for many years, was honored. Last year, Allie Coppeak received the praise.

This year, Oscar Tang was honored. He first started coming to the valley in 1966 and brought his family, including four children, five years later. He was aware that, during many of the first decades of Vail, culture, particularly in the summer, was sorely lacking. And as a New Yorker, the arts are something near and dear to his heart.

Of course, there’s no longer a cultural void. Virtually every night this summer there has been something happening in the arts.

“Gradually, we’ve seen these things build, which makes the area a complete community,” said Tang. “We’ve come a long way.”
