A helicopter for a ski lift
Chris Anthony started skiing when he was 1 year old and has never looked back since. Now in his 30s, he has taken his love of the sport and turned it into a way to make a living. Anthony is a guide for Points North Heli-Adventures, an Alaska-based adventure company dedicated to making the states backcountry a playground for those willing to take risks.Tonight at E-Town, Anthony will be on tap along with the founders of Points North, Kevin and Jessica Quinn, for a question-and-answer session about the risks, costs and benefits of heli-skiing. There also will be a slide show highlighting some of the companys scenic tours and experiences with clients. With full-scale winter approaching the mountains, Anthony felt it was time to bring the community together. Its a great opportunity for everyone to get together on that note, Anthony said. Its open to everybody, but especially to those that have had a curiosity of going to Alaska for heli-skiing.Heli-skiing has been around since the 1960s, but its popularity has been on the rise thanks to companies like Points North, which make the experience personal and unforgettable. Heli-skiing offers things to skiers and boarders that normal lift skiing just cant provide, such as shoulder-deep powder and remote locations untouched by man. Anthony capitalizes on snow-sports enthusiasts love for steeper and deeper runs by promising a unique adventure minus the long lift lines and tracked-out runs.
Its very much a mountaineering experience. Its not a resort experience. Were out there exposed to Mother Nature. Its a great opportunity, but it has to be done in a competent way, the right way, Anthony said. The heli-skiing awareness party is tied into the premiere of the new Warren Miller film, Playground, in which Anthony and the Quinns are featured. There will be prize giveaways and drink specials as well as the slide show, but Anthony just wants people who are curious about taking a heli-skiing adventure to walk away with more knowledge of the sport. If youre an expert skier, then at some point in your life, you have to go heli-skiing, Anthony said. Thats like the next thing, youve got to at least experience it once in your life.Arts & Entertainment Writer Charlie Owen can be reached at 748-2939 or email@example.com.
