A million vehicle March at tunnel

Staff Report

More than one million vehicles traveled through the Eisenhower Tunnel last month, the third-busiest March in its 31-year history.

The 1,000,970 cars and trucks that used the tunnel last month were closely divided in travel direction, with 500,816 traveling eastbound and 500,154 heading westbound. Tunnel traffic averaged 32,289 vehicles each day last month.

The highest traffic count in March occurred in 2002, when 1,077,362 vehicles passed through the tunnel.

“March traditionally is our big winter month,” said tunnel superintendent Mike Salamon. “Generally by (then), there are a few months of snowpack so people are coming up to enjoy the ski slopes and it is spring break for a lot of people. Those two things alone tend to increase March numbers.”

With 951,215 vehicles using the tunnel in March last year, this year’s count increased by nearly 50,000 cars and trucks.

March is usually the third highest traffic month at the Eisenhower Tunnel. Despite last month’s traffic count, a majority of tunnel records are set during July and August.

More than 10.6 million vehicles traveled through the tunnel in 2003.
