A New Perspective: You can’t control everything

Let go. What you’ve been doing isn’t working. Let go of the control of every situation and outcome. You really can’t control it all. Surrender to the idea that you don’t have to know everything, control everything and have everything your way. You’ll feel like you’ve released 1,000 pounds off your shoulders when you realize you don’t have to do it all, have it all and control every situation.

Do you try to control your mate, your work, your relationships? Is the outcome you expect better because you control it or would it turn out just as good if you let it go? We cannot live in the present moment when we believe we can carry the weight of the world. The thought that we can change the past or the future will begin to drive us crazy. We can truly only live in the present moment and be with it as it changes moment by moment.

The moment seems so important and if you surrender it, how could it possibly turn out okay? Surrendering means you understand that you can’t do it all. You give up your control to your higher power and trust that all will be taken care of and turn out just as it is supposed to. You learn that no matter how hard you try to control the outcome, you just can’t. To surrender the outcome to something bigger than you is a relief.

When we are told to let go of something, we begin, even if unconsciously, to wonder who we will be if we truly let go. When we surrender something, deciding it doesn’t benefit us in this moment, we release that energy from our body. Energetically, your being will lighten, as well as the body and mind. Don’t we have enough stuff in our daily lives to work through, work out and live through than to carry useless stress, thoughts, etc?

Make a choice right now of what’s important to you” what’s important in your life and what’s important right at this moment. If everything in your body relaxes as you decide that something does not benefit your life at this moment, then you are listening to the answers held in your body. Take a breath and choose to let it go ” it doesn’t benefit you. If you feel like you get an answer of yes, that this feeling or thought does benefit you, decide what you want to do with it. Whatever you do, do it without judgment. Do it and live it, without beating yourself up.

The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.

Who will you be if you really surrender this thought, action or situation? You’ll be exactly who you are, just lighter and more free. Take a moment and imagine how you will feel the more you learn to let go of things that do not benefit you. What an amazing thought! It’s actually simple. The only thing that gets in our way of choosing to let go or actually doing it is our ego. There is no one other than you making the choices in your life.

Surrendering is work. Learn to surrender as you move through the moments of your life. The results as we learn to let go, slowly and over time, is worth the practice.

When were so focused on our “stuff” and controlling it all, we have no room for new and exciting ideas and thoughts. Try it.

One day say “I surrender this” and see what happens. Just see if it turns out OK despite the fact you’re not as involved.
