A new school year begins

Dr. Drew Werner

EAGLE COUNTY – To all our first time students, congratulations on embarking on one of the most important journeys of your life. To all our returning students, welcome back. Your school year will be as great as you make it, so make it a great one! I just got home from the school kick-off ice cream social at St. Clare of Assisi School. The excitement was palpable from students and faculty alike. Welcomes go out too then to all the new faculty and returning teachers throughout our valley. A special welcome to Peggy Warner and her husband who have just joined our great community. Peggy is St. Clare’s new principal. She hails from Massachusetts and brings a wealth of experience, excitement and Christian faith. To all parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, congratulations are in order too if you have a student returning to school. If you are a teacher (like my wife) and have been working hard getting the classroom ready and lesson plans in order, thank you. The time you spend, long hours and hard work are appreciated more than you know. Our students are better people, smarter, stronger and wiser because of you.To everyone, please be careful. Our sidewalks and intersections are a bit more crowded. School buses are starting and stopping. We need to watch out for them as we move through our daily routines. They may not be watching us as they dart across the street.I recently read a very wise quote from Will Smith, the actor. He said that he was always told to search out the best peer group he could find and then join it. The reason? He would never achieve more or be better than the peer group that influenced him. How true for us all. Equally importantly, our children may be watching us even if we’re not on our best behavior. Our example is more important than our words.Be safe. Work hard. Be a role model for others and choose wisely the best role models for you. Have a great school year!Remember your health is your responsibility! Health is our greatest asset and it doesn’t happen by accident. If something doesn’t seem right, or questions are left unanswered don’t wait, call your doctor.Dr. Drew Werner of the Eagle Valley Medical Center writes a weekly column for the Daily.
