A passion for gold in Vail
August 7, 2010
VAIL, Colorado – Master goldsmith and innovative jeweler, Gurhan returns to the Squash Blossom in Vail today through Saturday showcasing his newest collection. The jeweler has been showing his work at Squash Blossom since 1997, according to owner Patti Cogswell.
“Gurhan’s superb craftsmanship, unique designs and boldness makes him a perfect fit as our premier jeweler,” Cogswell said.
Gurhan’s passion for jewelry design began with a chance encounter when he purchased a small piece of 24-karat gold at Istanbul’s famous Grand Bazaar. He marveled at the wondrous metal and a passion for the art of jewelry design emerged. Gurhan rediscovered the ancient techniques of jewelry design and created new techniques and tools, which make the 24-karat gold stronger than previously considered.
Instead of sketching ideas Gurhan creates his art based on the woman herself. He imagines how the handmade creation will fit the woman.
“I have to imagine a woman – her neck, her style, her bearing –to really be able to turn simple gold and stones into jewelry,” Gurhan said.
His work can be seen on some of the most beautiful and famous women in the world such as Angelina Jolie, Kate Hudson and Gwyneth Paltrow. Most recently the Metropolitan Museum of Art commissioned him to create museum-quality jewelry for their esteemed traveling exhibition.
