Special to the DailyOn June 1, the Vilar Center summer season kicks off with Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Editor’s note: Director’s Corner is a weekly column where Kris Sabel, who is in charge of cultural programming for the Vail Valley Foundation, gives his expert take on shows not to be missed at the Vilar Center for the Arts in Beaver Creek. The column will take a break through the month of May and return in the summer.

BEAVER CREEK – As we move into spring, the Director’s Corner column will be taking a break, but will return in mid-May to update you on the summer performances not to be missed. I want to thank those who have taken the time to comment to me about this column, and once again, I want to thank everyone who has come out to support the performing arts this winter at the Vilar Center.

Although the winter season is over, we are still very busy at the Vilar Center for the next eight weeks. Our STARS (Support the Arts Reaching Children) educational program, which has provided programming for over 5,000 local students this year, concludes for the season on April 19 with two stage performances of the award-winning children’s book “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.”We also have a multitude of community events taking place at the theater throughout the off-season. Between now and the end of May, there are 21 days of rehearsals, performances and private events. We don’t have an off season.Among them are several underwritten by the Vilar Center Community Performance Fund, which provides grants to over a dozen local groups each year. In May, we will be working with the Vail Christian High School and the Vail and Eagle Dance Academies on their spring productions and recitals.

On June 1, the summer season kicks off with Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter. This show is already 36 percent sold, so please contact the box office to get your tickets today.Other concerts confirmed for this summer include Los Lonely Boys on July 25, Kris Kristofferson on Aug. 5, Gordon Lightfoot on Aug. 18, Tower of Power on Aug. 26 and comedian Craig Shoemaker on Sept. 13. We plan to add another four to six outstanding concerts to this lineup and will announce the full schedule by the end of April. In addition to our concert series the Vilar summer lineup includes the return of free family movies on Friday nights in June and July. We are also proud to be the home of the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival’s Chamber Music series, as well as the venue for several performances of the Vail International Dance Festival. The Vail Valley Theatre Company and the Vail Performing Arts Academy will present their summer musicals in July and August respectively. And to round out the season, the Vail Symposium will be presenting a series of films in late August and early September. In the meantime, enjoy the warm weather and I look forward to seeing you soon.
