A sneak peek at Colorado Senate race’s likely plays

After two weeks of quiet fundraising and intense staff meetings, the campaigns of Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet and Republican challenger Ken Buck are ready to roll out their game plans for the general election.

National issues dominate. Seldom does either candidate bring up Colorado controversies – over expanding Fort Carson, for example, or protecting more wilderness areas from development.

Also notable is what the candidates do not say on the general-election campaign trail. Despite his bedrock conservatism, Buck is uninterested in emphasizing divisive social issues – for example, his stance on banning abortion even in the case of rape or incest.
