A truly Seussian adventure
The first two weeks of ticket sales at the Vilar Center have surpassed all previous records! Many shows are selling out, so make sure to call the box office (845-TIXS) or go online (www.vilarpac.org) for yours today. We have an incredible performer making an encore visit to the Vilar Center next weekend. Jackie Greene plays his blues rock on Saturday, Dec. 1. Ill talk more about this truly talented singer/songwriter next week, but I wanted to be sure you save the date for what promises to be one of the seasons best shows. On Nov. 28 we have something for the entire family. Seussical: The Musical is a wonderful stage adventure, bringing to life the characters and storylines from some of the most beloved childrens tales of all time. The Cat in the Hat leads your favorite Dr. Seuss characters from the page to the stage. The themes presented throughout the show (kindness, acceptance, self-esteem, the value of imagination, human rights and faithfulness) are simple enough to be understood by children, yet universal enough to touch the hearts of even the most Grinch-like adults. There is a profound importance to lyrics such as a persons a person no matter how small and the plight of the planet of Who has an eerie timeliness: Here on Who we live in fear/Were drifting through space and cannot steer/A troubled and tiny land/Our futures in your hand. The score emerges as a Seussian gumbo of musical styles, ranging from Latin to pop, swing to gospel, and R&B to funk. So let your toes tap, your fingers snap and your imagination run wild! Dr. Seuss has been one true friend in the universe to millions of young readers for generations and Seussical: The Musical brings these valuable stories to audiences in a wonderful new form. You may recall the original 2001 Broadway production closed after 6 months and lost over 10 million dollars. As is typical in some Broadway shows, it was over-produced with too much glitz and not enough attention to telling a simple story. The show was reworked and had a successful national and international tour. It was eventually adapted into this 75-minute version, which has toured all over the world and had a very successful run off-Broadway this summer. This particular production is one of the most successful shows ever produced by Theatreworks USA. There will be a noon performance as part of our STARS series (Support the Arts Reaching Students), in which local students will enjoy the show for free as part of their curriculum. The 6:30 p.m. performance is open to the public, with tickets offered at $14 for children and $18 for adults. I hope to see you at the Vilar for this wonderful musical adventure!
