A Wildridge hummingbird

The broad-tailed hummingbird, seen here in Wildridge on Saturday, is medium-sized for a hummingbird and is only 4 inches in length.The wing beats at a rate as high as 78 per second and were barely stopped here with a shutter speed of 1/750th of a second. Both the male and female have an iridescent green back with a white breast. The male gorget (throat patch) shines with an iridescent red. Rick Spitzer | Special to the Daily
