Absynth Quintet plays free show in Eagle-Vail
VAIL CO, Colorado
Absynth Quintet, a five-piece ensemble from the fertile hills of Humboldt County, Cali., melds a reverent treatment of time-honored American music, with a reckless, virtuosic and often zany approach to music. There’s something Django-esque, and distinctly Eastern European that saturates many of the songs, but always present is the foot-stomping influence of its bluegrass roots. The Absynth Quintet, a group of pickers known for high-energy acoustic music, will perform a free show at Paddy’s in Eagle-Vail Thursday.
The band is Bird Jowaisas on mandolin and Lithuanian party bugle, Ryan Roberts on guitar, John Ludington on bass, Ian Davidson on electric banjo and nose flute, and Tofu Schwartz on drums, percussion and kazoo. Absynth Quintet broke onto the national scene in 2008 with the release of “Indigo Shoes,” which was recorded in Humboldt County at the band’s studio, The Sonic Dimple, over the course of three wet winter months.
