Accident victim was Basalt man
SNOWMASS VILLAGE – It was a Basalt resident who was found dead in Brush Creek in Snowmass Village this morning, according to police, although the man’s identity was being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.The man was found in an overturned vehicle straddling the creek with its passenger area partially submerged, according to Snowmass Village Police Sgt. Brian Olson. The wreck was found at about noon by town employees, and no one had come forward with any information about when or how it happened, Olson said.Police believe the victim was the driver of the vehicle; there was no indication of another passenger in the car, Olson said.Olson said it appeared the car, a black Altima with Colorado plates, was headed out of town, down the Brush Creek Valley, and that the driver lost control as he drew about even with the Alpine Bank building on Brush Creek Road near the Snowmass Center shopping complex. The stream bank is very steep at that point, Olson said. The Colorado State Patrol conducted an accident investigation at the scene in the early afternoon on Monday, Olson said.As to whether the man might have worked in Snowmass Village, Olson said, “I get the sense that, yes, he was an employee of some place in the village.”He said Snowmass officers were in the process of interviewing possible witnesses and visiting work sites in order to learn more. This story will be updated.
