Additional roundabouts coming to Avon
It’s going to take all your fingers and some toes to count the number of roundabouts you’ll see in Avon in the next couple of years.
A newest one is under construction north of Interstate 70 at Post Boulevard and Swift Gulch Road, part of a connecting loop north of the interstate for the Village at Avon.
That new road and roundabout is expected to cost approximately $3 million, said Norm Wood, Avon town engineer. It is being built by the developers of the Village at Avon.
By this time next year another roundabout will be built near Pizza Hut at Buck Creek Road and Nottingham Road.
“With all the potential commercial properties there we’ll see traffic so heavy there’s a good possibility it will be a right turn in and right turn out,” Wood said. That roundabout is expected to cost $2.5 million.
The two new roundabouts join the five on Avon Road and four existing roundabouts on Post Boulevard near Wal-Mart and Home Depot. The Avon Road roundabouts have handled up to 27,000 vehicles per day during peak and are expected to be able to handle up to 40,000, Wood said.
A final roundabout on Highway 6 at the entrance to Eagle Bend is in the planning stage. The town has asked the Colorado Department of Transportation to place it on a capital projects planning list. Wood said he expects that roundabout won’t be built for three or more years.
