EAGLE COUNTY – Outward Bound’s Expeditionary Learning program can be the experience of a lifetime. Six Eagle County students will have that experience thanks to scholarships provided by Outward Bound. Jon Paul Ferzacca, Dylan Bellerose and Claudia Reyes are Minturn Middle School eighth graders who will attend the Southwest River Expedition program this summer. Students must be 14 years old to participate. Minturn Middle School Principal Toni Boush says the scholarships went to very deserving kids. “Jon Paul always has a smile on his face – he is a really happy kid,” Boush says. “Dylan is a quite leader in many aspects – he knows exactly where he needs to go.”Bellerose says he was nervous to apply at first, but that feeling quickly vanished after he spoke to his aunt. “She talked me into applying because she had gone on a similar trip and said that it was really fun,” says Bellerose. Because he loves the outdoors, the fit is perfect for Bellerose. “I’m looking forward to meeting people from around the country – I can’t wait to go,” he says.Expeditionary Learning Schools Outward Bound is open to kids in kindergarten through 12th grade. The program combines academics with the outdoors and community service. Red Canyon High School students Josh Blurton, Mike Smith and Justin Tribby also received scholarships. Smith says the application process was fairly easy. “We had to write essays describing why we wanted to go,” Smith says. Smith was originally looking a trip that was scheduled in Utah and Arizona – rafting through the Cataract Canyon – but that trip may not happen. So, along with his principal, Wade Hill, Smith is looking at other trips. “I’m excited about getting the opportunity to meet new people, try new things and maybe face some fears,” Smith says.
