Aide to Vilar’s partner testifies
NEW YORK ” An assistant to Alberto Vilar’s partner said she was told to cut and paste the signature of client Lily Cates on a letter ordering $250,000 of her money to be moved into an account of Vilar’s Amerindo Investment Advisors in 2003, Bloomberg.com reported Thursday.
The partner, Gary Tanaka, and Vilar, a former Beaver Creek resident and philanthropist, are facing criminal fraud and conspiracy charges in New York.
Maxine Rye, former aide to Gary Tanaka, has been testifying this week.
Prosecutors Wednesday showed the videotaped testimony of Rye, who said she faxed the transfer order to Bear Stearns and Co. in 2003 at Tanaka’s direction, Bloomberg reported.
“He said go downstairs and get a signature and stick it on and send it over,” Rye testified, according to Bloomberg. “I didn’t want to argue with him, so I just did it.”
Vilar and Tanaka are charged with conspiracy, securities fraud, investment-adviser fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and lying to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. They face as much as 20 years in prison.
Vilar and Tanaka have pleaded not guilty.
