Air traffic up in January
More people flew into the Eagle County Airport in January of this year than last.
“We’re up a bit,” said Ovid Seifers, airport operations manager.
The commercial air passenger count was up 2.3 percent to 39,997 from 39,065 in 2003.
The increase would have been significantly larger had not the airport been closed by a major snow storm Jan. 3 on one of the busiest flight days of the ski season. That was the departure day for the Christmas and New Year’s holiday.
The storm stranded nearly 3,000 people and reduced the passenger use accordingly.
The numbers are encouraging because in 2003 the number of people using the airport – 170,601 – was down by approximately 500 from the previous year. The number of flights in winter was cut last year, but it was nearly offset by the addition of a direct daily summer flight from Dallas.
